The President hosts typography workshop by well-known Dutch designer
Publishing and design consultancy, The President is presenting a typography
workshop by well-known Dutch designer, Richard Niessen.
The two day typography course, that will be hosted on 19 and 22 September, will
include an overview of Niessen’s own work, as well as a detailed presentation on
his personal methods of creating typography. On day two, delegates will receive
a practical assignment that will be completed under the guidance of the speaker.
During the workshop Niessen will focus on editing content, translating that
content into type, making characters for a typeface, producing a simple poster
and then translating that into another medium.
Richard Niessen graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in
1996. His work is systematic, grid-like, readable and usable, as much as it is rich
in form, shape and colour. Niessen gives projects a distinct language, a secret
vocabulary that makes each piece stand out. His consistent oeuvre echoes the
seamless integration of typography, calligraphy, imagery and text found in
Byzantine and Medieval illuminated manuscripts.
“There are very few courses in South Africa for designers and we would like to
expose young local talent to top international designers like Richard Niessen,”
says creative director of The President, Peet Pienaar. “We are very excited about
hosting this talented typographic artist here in South Africa. Typography is an art
that requires a very sensitive and skillful approach and Richard is one of the best
there is out there.”
Delegates can contact The President at hannerie@thepresident.co.za to book
one of the limited spaces. The fee is R1750 for both days and includes lunch and
a booklet featuring a selection of Niessen’s work.
